How can I do aerobic exercise (jumping, running) without killing my feet?

My father used to go running every day. Now he’s in his 70s and his feet are in constant pain because he didn’t protect them. How can I do aerobic exercise but keep from having the same fate?
Bicycle, swimming, elliptical. Make sure you get properly supportive shoes.

What about swimming? That’s fantastic aerobic excersize which doesn’t put any strain on your feet. X

Get the right shoes! This is very important for athletes and runners! Shock absorbing shoes…i like new balance myself. Make sure you are fitted correctly (which is what New Balance does in their stores). It’s a worthwhile investment to have the right shoes…did i say get the right shoes? LOL

bike riding is also great exercise. If you do weight-bearing aerobic exercise, do NOT buy cheap shoes. Make sure that you have good arch support and plenty of cushion. Athletic shoes should also be replaced regularly; at least once a year, get a new pair. More often if you exercise often.

Unfortunately, as we age and the more physical exercise that we do our body does have wear and tear like any other machine. Some things that can help, glucosamine/chondrothin for joints, extra calcium to help fortify your bones- what you eat now can help you later. Strengthing exercise for your legs to help support all the bones and joints. Also proper shoes and replacing then when they wear out. So if you’re an avid runner, that could mean new shoes every 3-6 months. If you need extra support add a gel insert. I have over pronation in my feet, and have to get special support for them from an orthopedic. I have shoes from Spira and when I went to them, they had me stand on a machine that measured the pressure I put on my feet and based from that, they confirmed what my doc said and found me the right shoes. Hope this helps.

As others have said, proper footwear is critical to foot health. However, there are several things you will want to keep in mind to ensure that your exercise is providing optimal benefit with minimal damage:
1. Get very supportive shoes and replace them often. The more exercise you do, the more often you should replace them. Expect to buy a new pair every 6-12 months.
2. Use good posture in your exercise. If you aren’t sure what that is, consult with a trainer or coach. It is important to have your body weight properly distributed on your hips, knees and feet in order to prevent joint injury and strain.
3. Vary your workouts: doing the same thing every day (such as running) will over time wear out the joints in the areas that are involved. Switching between running, biking, walking, swimming, rowing – whatever gets your heart rate up is fine for aerobics – will use different components of your muscles and joints and will not wear them out as quickly.

Some argue that reliance on shoes actually causes the problem, and that it’s actually better to run barefoot.
